DIY Natural Bath Bombs using Essential Oils

Materials

  • 1 cup Baking Soda
  • ½ cup Citric Acid
  • 2 tbsp Epsom Salt
  • 3 tbsp Melted Coconut Oil
  • 4 drops Essential Oil
  • 1 tsp Water (or more if necessary)
  • Molds

Instructions

  • Combine your baking soda, citric acid, and epsom salts in a large bowl. Stir them together well. **Be sure not to breathe in the citric acid, as it is powerful and can cause respiratory issues. I suggest wearing a mask to be safe especially if kids are involved in this project! Citric acid is natural and not harmful to skin but may cause irritation when breathed in.
  • In a small bowl combine together your melted coconut oil and chosen essential oils
  • VERY SLOWLY whisk your wet ingredients into the dry. You'll want it to reach a crumbly consistency.
  • Your mixture is ready when you can mold it into a shape and it sticks without coming apart. If it seems too crumbly, add in a bit more water, only 1 tsp at a time. Your mixture should be dry but also able to hold shape.
  • Pack your mixture into your molds to create their fun shape
  • Remove them carefully and place on a baking sheet to dry out for about 8-12 hours.
  • Enjoy your bath bombs!

Notes

Is CITRIC ACID SAFE to use in bath bombs?
YES - It's a common ingredient in bath bombs and other bath and body products.
Citric acid is a weak, naturally occurring acid that's non-toxic.
When mixed with water, citric acid neutralizes baking soda, which is another common ingredient in bath bombs.
The reaction between citric acid and water creates carbon dioxide, which causes the fizzing action in bath bombs.
Citric acid can also help release the scent of essential oils into the air.

Safety tips
Before using a new bath bomb, you can test it by rubbing it on your elbow and waiting 48 hours. Using products with citric acid in high concentrations or inappropriately can cause skin burns.
