Color & Design Inspiration
The first thing I always do before anything else is to find a birthday invitation that I love and most importantly, that my kids love too. I round up a few that are my favorites and then run it by them to see which one they like best. This way they can feel involved in the party planning! For me, the invitation sets the whole tone for the party I’m about to plan. I found this adorable invite and carried it with me, eventually spotting some cute unicorn artwork at a nearby Homegoods!
Pre-Party Photoshoot
I always love to do a photoshoot with my kids around the day of their party. It’s become an annual tradition. I work to find an outfit that matches their party theme, which gets them excited — and they twirl around while I snap some shots. This fancy floral pastel-colored dress that I found couldn’t be more perfect! It was $26 on sale. You don’t need to spend a lot, sometimes it just takes a little extra effort to find something good!
Unicorn Painting Craft
I found these sweet ceramic unicorns for the girls to paint, and they were a big hit! Everything was included: they came with points, sequins, gemstones, stickers and paintbrushes which made it really easy to pull off this craft.
Homemade Sparkly Unicorn Cookies and Cupcakes
My kids always want to be a part of the party planning and prep, and obviously the older they get, the more help they really do become! They feel such a sense of pride in whatever tasks I assign to them. So while our cookies and cake may not look “professional”, I’d rather them be a family effort in putting them together, helping make those memories! Our favorite sugar cookie recipe we use time and time again is this. I’ve tried a lot of different recipes and these are NO FAIL. Trust me on this. For creating the pastel-colored icing, I love to use a more natural food coloring.
Ice Cream Unicorn Birthday Cake
When a birthday party falls in the month of August, I find it a lot easier to get an ice cream cake because chances are, it’s gonna be a hot one! We have a local creamery that makes the most delicious homemade ice cream cakes at a very reasonable price, so I ordered one and requested that they not decorate or add any sprinkles so that I could use my favorite natural ones add this sweet topper I found on Etsy to match my pastel color scheme.
Big Number Balloons for Photo Ops
Every year I love to get the big number balloons to use as a photo op post-party! This big number six balloon matched my color scheme and was super cute!
