Winter birthdays can be tough to plan.
Let’s face it – February can be a difficult month to host a party. You’re in the bleak of winter. You just don’t know what the forecast will have in store for you. There’s no real option for being outside for the majority of the party. It’s just much easier to host in the summer, am I right?!?
When February came rolling around and my Ellie was going to turn 7, I wondered what was something really special that we could come up with. Our family finished reading through Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe the year prior and watched the movies many times over by that point. My kids were and still are, obsessed. I absolutely love the story as well.
My daughter Ellie even reminds me a little bit of Lucy Pevensie’s character. So that was it – I was completely sold on the Narnia theme! We got to brainstorming and watched the movie yet again to make a list of party ideas!

We invited our guests to come in costume and they sure delivered! We even had a beaver!
I’ve since created my own blank instantly printable Narnia-inspired invitation for birthdays, book clubs, or any other Narnia-inspired event you may have which is available HERE!

My husband Jesse created this gorgeous wardrobe out of an old refrigerator box (fortunately he had just finished building a kitchen and happened to have one handy! Talk about impeccable timing!) Upon arrival, everyone is invited to walk through the wardrobe, push past the fur coats as they make their way into the magical land of Narnia!
“To the glistening eastern sea, I give you Queen Lucy the Valiant.”

“Daughter of Eve from the far land of Spare Oom where eternal summer reigns around the bright city of War Drobe, how would it be if you came and had tea with me?”

Create the “Ultimate Kids Narnia Party” Atmosphere
The vision was to recreate the feel of Mr. Tumnus’ home by finding items around our house such as a small wooden table, antique copper tea kettle, and whatever other household things that looked vintage-y and old- including paintings, frames and books. We usually collect old birds nests and feathers on our mantel and so it worked well to just leave them! We even managed to find a picture of Mr. Tumnus’ father, framed and placed it on the mantle! You can find and print that somewhat creepy picture here.

Think woodsy, natural materials and golden accents no matter what color scheme you decide to go with. Anything with natural wood, neutral-colored bottlebrush trees leftover from Christmas and pinecones will fit the theme really well. I purchased a life-size cutout of a lamppost since I ran out of time to make one, which was an important part of our scavenger hunt.
And don’t forget – no Narnia party is ever complete without the original motion picture soundtrack playing in the background!

Narnia Cake
Making the cake was easy and so fun. I made a mostly organic gluten-free vanilla cake with a layer of strawberry preserves and covered it in organic chocolate frosting, placed a Lion figurine and bottlebrush tree with a printed out lamppost that I glued on some cardboard backing to make it firm, and then dusted the cake with powdered sugar to look like snow!
Our family had never eaten Turkish Delight before but this seemed like the perfect opportunity to give it a try so I ordered a box and wrapped it in a golden napkin next to the cake. I’d say the consensus on the Turkish delight was about 50/50.

‘Wrong will be right when Aslan comes in sight, at the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more. When he bares his teeth, winter meets its death and when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again’.

So the day of the party arrived and was somewhat gray and dismal outside- which actually worked quite well to help create the atmosphere! Kids were so excited to step through the wardrobe and take pictures with Aslan! Leading up to the party, there were a few friends who were unfamiliar with the story so we lent them this perfect little version for littles to read up and have some idea of what was happening at our event!

The White Witch (my sister AKA greatest Aunt ever!) made a grand entrance in her crown with her sidekick Nikabrik (fiancé!) and pulled off a stellar performance for the kids. She borrowed some faux fur from a friend and figured out the rest of her outfit on her own. The kids were slightly terrified but also laughing at the same time.

Ellie’s grandfather (my Dad!) came dressed as “Father Christmas”!
Then the White Witch and Nikabrik ran the scavenger hunt which I had prepared. Kids LOVED the scavenger hunt, taking turns reading and figuring out where the clues led them next. The hunt ended with a basket of “treasures”- pearl necklaces for the ladies, knight masks for the boys and plenty of chocolate golden coins to go around!

“Someday you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.” -C.S. Lewis

Next it was time for the “battle” between Aslan, the White Witch and Nikabrik. The kids who wanted to participate were asked to choose their side and given inflatable weapons. With soundtrack blaring, you can only imagine how intense and hilarious this was! Some kids took it very seriously, while younger guests viewed the battle from the sidelines.

A Narnia Party to remember!
In the end this party came together so beautifully – and was such a group effort with a newborn in the house! Each family member pitched in with their skills and talents, which truly made it that much more special and memorable. I think this was my favorite party to host to date! Definitely a Narnia party to remember!
