My little boy turned 2 this month, and I thought a Little Bear-themed birthday party would be perfect for him! Inspired by the classic children’s books and TV series, the sheer thought of a Little Bear party felt so cozy, gentle, and full of woodland joy! Not only do I personally remember reading and watching the show as a kid which makes me feel super nostalgic, but I also feel like Minarik’s Little Bear stories are so heartwarming and sweet – If I’m going to let my 2-year old watch anything on tv, it’s going to be something like Little Bear! From food and drinks to decorations and activities, here is a collection of ideas for How to Host A Little Bear Party!

When I hosted this Little Bear birthday party behind our barn, surrounded by woods, the setting couldn’t have been more perfect — like stepping into the pages of a storybook. I leaned into the “Birthday Soup” episode that I always remembered, where Little Bear’s friends gather to make him a special soup while Mother Bear is away! We actually watched the episode together again to get more inspiration!

“The pot is by the fire. The water in the pot is hot. If I put something in the water, I can make Birthday Soup. All my friends like soup.” – Little Bear

Little Bear Birthday Invitation
I designed this adorable customizable Little Bear invitation, as well as a few others – plus lots of other matching Little Bear party supplies which you can find right here on my Etsy shop, Party on Fern! I had it in my mind to do a Little Bear Birthday party for my son for awhile – but when I went online to find party supplies, I realized there weren’t many that I liked so I designed my own collection! My shop offers custom banners, cake and cupcake toppers, party favor tags and more!

I did a few further customizations to my original designs to make everything match perfectly for this specific party. And like all of my other parties, I used the invitation as my color palette and source of all my party inspiration aesthetically! On my invite, I wrote “Birthday Soup & Treats Will Be Served!”
Setting a Cozy Woodland Party Theme Atmosphere

Think of a “cozy, woodland, picnic-in-the-forest” – vibe inspired by the peaceful forest setting of Little Bear: using soft greens and earth tones to match my invitation, rustic, wooden slabs and wooden-looking tableware; neutral-toned decorations, and lots of natural elements such as twigs, pinecones, wildflowers and daisies from around the property. Envision all things rustic, vintage, and cottage–style. I wanted to pull from the sage green on the invite, so I chose these sage green gingham tablecloths, added burlap runners, set the tables with these awesome wooden-looking plastic plates, mason jars with fresh-picked wildflower arrangements, and even had my husband cut up some tree stump seats for our littlest ones attending our party!

Wooden signs like “Little Bear’s Home”, “Hen’s House” and “Duck’s Pond” added to the charm, while the classic books and my son’s new favorite plush Little Bear sat on the dessert table helping tie it all together!

I decided to throw this party outdoors behind our barn, since it was late September yet the weather had remained very mild! The plan was to conclude with a bonfire at the end of the party – (reminiscent of the Little Bear “Campfire” episode) for whoever wanted to stay and linger! Plus what kid doesn’t love a good bonfire?! And this one was to be roaring one since my husband had a lot of extra wood lying around to burn! Such a great opportunity for parents to get to hang out and chat while kids ran wild and got all of their energy out after dessert!
Let’s Rewind for a Minute: Celebrating Our Little Bear – One Week Before the “Kids Party”
So my son’s actual birthday was a week prior to when we scheduled his celebration with family and friends, so we did a special breakfast together before a long homeschool co-op day out of the house. I decorated our kitchen for the morning with balloons and my customized Little Bear Birthday Banner. Because my invitation is sage green, I customized the banner to match it exactly.
We started off the day with celebratory cinnamon buns, singing “Happy Birthday”! Next, we let him open a few presents – two of which were Little Bear-themed! An adorable plush little bear, and this classic book set. He fell in LOVE with his bear right away, carrying it with him wherever he went! He even tried feeding it some quinoa and beans!

Little Bear Cupcakes
I decided to make some cupcakes to bring along with us that co-op day to share with our friends. I love using my favorite Vanilla Gluten-Free Cake Mix , Organic Frosting, and my own Little Bear Cupcake Toppers!

Little Bear Birthday Party Food Ideas
Little Bear’s Birthday Soup
For our kids party, I really wanted to serve soup in honor of the “Birthday Soup” episode. I decided to do the party later in the day so it would be more of a dinnertime affair – this party’s time was 4-7pm! I think this is the latest I’d ever hosted a kid’s party, but we all know in some ways that it’s more for the adults, since he’s only 2! This also worked well for us all because it fit around our boy’s current nap-time schedule!

“Let me see what we have. We have carrots and potatoes, peas and tomatoes; I can make soup with carrots, potatoes, peas and tomatoes.” – Little Bear
In the classic story, the soup includes carrots, potatoes, peas, tomatoes, and corn. We served a hearty lentil-vegetable soup and called that “Little Bear’s Birthday Soup.” A big crockpot on the table with a rustic wooden ladle made it fun and easy for guests to help themselves. I purchased these disposable bowls for serving and made our favorite Lentil Soup Recipe. What’s so great about making soup for a party is that it can be done well-ahead of time, and even frozen weeks before and thawed for the party! I’m all about getting things done way ahead of time to lessen the stress!

I knew not everyone would be into a vegetarian soup and we’d need something a little more hefty, so I doubled this favorite beef chili recipe, and a favorite turkey chili as well in other crockpots – along with some sourdough, rice and my favorite gluten-free cornbread muffins with all the fixings on the side! This included chips, avocado, cheese, and sour cream!

Little Bear Birthday Desserts
“Birthday soup is good to eat, but not as good as birthday cake. I am so happy you did not forget!” – Little Bear

“Oh, Mother Bear,” says Little Bear, “What a big beautiful birthday cake!”

I wanted the cake to be a bit rustic-looking and woodland-inspired- and I also wanted to use my favorite beehive cake mold that I just LOVE and have used for two of my other Winnie the Pooh parties in the past …Because all bears love honey, right?! And my son loves saying the word: “BEE”! Unfortunately he got stung on his eyelid(!) last month (his first time getting stung!) but somehow that experience has not deterred him in the least from loving bees! So in honor of his affection for them, I figured this cake would be PERFECT.

“This birthday cake is a surprise for you. I never did forget your birthday, and I never will.” – Mother Bear

How to Make a Beehive Cake
To make a beehive cake like I did, first you’ll need to buy this mold, then use this recipe for the cake and decorate with these bees! See an example of the completed cake in one of my Winnie the Pooh Parties HERE. I decorated the cake with my custom Little Bear Cake Topper and added some tiny bows atop the wooden sticks with matching gingham ribbon.

Little Bear Cupcakes
I also decided to make some cupcakes again for this party along with the Beehive Cake so that it would be easier for kids to just grab them quickly! My favorite cake brand to buy when making a boxed-cake or cupcakes is this gluten-free one. My favorite icing to buy is this organic one. I then added my Little Bear cupcake toppers to decorate! To make them even more special and fitting with the rustic theme, I then wrapped the cupcakes in these really cool wood grain cupcake wrappers!
“Forest Berries”
I thought it would be nice to have an assortment of fruit for those who did not want cake or cookies. We served blackberries, strawberries and blueberries!
Bear Paw-Print Cookies
How cute are they?!! Below is the recipe we used for making these adorable paw-print cookies!

Peanut Butter Paw Print Cookie Recipe

D-I-Y Brown Bear Trail Mix

There are so many ways you can make a “bear-themed” trail mix, but let me tell you how I made mine! I mixed together the following ingredients and put them in clear plastic bags, tying them with my matching gingham ribbon! This is what I gave to the older kids as party favors – Nothing crazy, just nice and simple! If you’d like you could also add freeze-dried blueberries , raspberries or strawberries, or any other dried fruit pieces!

These Maple waffle bites or Honeycomb Cereal

Beverage Ideas for Your Little Bear Party:

Little Bear Party Activities
Little Bear & Friends Photo Op
Just as with most of our other parties, my talented artist mother made this adorable mural cutout for taking pictures with the littles! She’s been doing these ever since I was a kid – it’s become a family birthday tradition! Not only does it provide a fun and creative art project, but you can get your whole family involved!

Open Playground Time!
I decorated our little playground area with signage that I painted on some scrap wood saying “Little Bear’s Home”!

A Make-Your-Own Birthday Soup Sensory Bin Station

“Happy birthday Little Bear,” says Hen. “Thank you, Hen,” says Little Bear. “I hope you like Birthday Soup. I am making Birthday Soup. -Minarik

“Now, here is some soup for you, Hen, and here is some soup for you, Duck, and here is some soup for you, Cat, and here is some soup for me. Now we can all have some Birthday Soup.” – Little Bear

Inspired by the classic story, “Birthday Soup”, the little kids got to pretend they were making their own! I filled a medium-sized galvanized tub with some sensory bin filler items (expired food items I found in the bottom of my pantry such as old random boxes of pasta, a dried multi-color lentil and bean mix). Then I added these plastic veggies, and this beautiful wooden set of sensory bin tools and scoops! I put all of this out on a table the appropriate height for 2-3 year olds and added little stumps as seats! This helped keep the younger kids entertained throughout the party and immersed in the story world! It was a BIG hit, and I highly recommend this activity! At times, even some of the older kids sat down and played along with the littles which was the sweetest thing to see!

Here Are Some Other Party Activity Ideas:
A Storytime Corner – A cozy blanket spot for reading Little Bear stories aloud
Some Forest Animal Mask Making – Hen, Duck, Owl, Cat, and of course, Little Bear!
A Birthday Scavenger Hunt – Inspired by the friends’ surprise
A Teddy Bear Picnic – Guests can bring their favorite stuffed animals!
Campfire Time!
What a fun way to wrap up the party. Everyone loves a good bonfire. This also ties nicely into the Little Bear “Campfire” story! I couldn’t think of a better thing to do towards the end of a September evening when the sun goes down and it starts to get a bit chilly! If you’d like you could do s’mores as another activity/treat! We refrained, because I thought the kids had certainly had enough sugar at that point! The older kids ran off playing man-hunt and night-fishing by the pond while the little ones kept close to the adults.

Little Bear Party Favor Ideas

We had a mixture of ages at our party, so for the really young kids (between 2-3 years old) I printed out this free, cute Little Bear Coloring page and paired that with these adorable and extremely affordable(!) mini watercolor sets for them to take home! I added in a pack of bees, bugs and butterflies fruit snacks and my Little Bear Adventure Scavenger Hunt for an activity to do with their parents at home! We put them in these cute D-I-Y bear bags that my daughter had so much fun making!

For the older kiddos, any of these following yummy, themed treats would be perfect: Organic YumEarth Gummy Bears; Bear Fruit Snack Minis; Teddy Grahams; DIY Brown Bear Mix Trail Mix; Chocolate or Honey bear lollipops; the above Bear Paw Print Cookies wrapped up really cute!
For this party, we sent older kids home with the Brown Bear Trail Mix wrapped in little clear bags and tied together with gingham ribbon!

Wrapping Up Our Sweet Celebration!
Our Little Bear birthday party was the perfect blend of sweet nostalgia and imaginative play. Hosting ours outdoors, behind the barn surrounded by woods with a campfire made the day feel extra special, and the memories are ones I know we’ll all treasure forever!

From story-inspired foods to woodland activities, every little detail adds to the charm. Kids (and parents!) will feel like they’ve stepped right into Little Bear’s world. The best part? It’s not about perfection, but about the joy and wonder your child feels surrounded by friends, fun, and pure imagination!
