A Little Buckaroo on the Way!
After having two girls, (currently ages 7 and 10) I sure thought we were done having babies. Well, God had other plans… and we found out in early January of 2023 that we were pregnant! We were thrilled, as I felt that I was really not ready to leave the “little kid” phase.
However, it had been many years since the BABY phase! So with limited space in our house, and just having given over a bedroom to my oldest daughter so she didn’t need to share with her little sister anymore, we quickly realized we would have to take that room back and claim it for baby! At first, she didn’t mind because she was so excited to be having a new baby brother, but fast forward to a year later and I think she is a little resentful at this little bundle of joy for stealing her room! Oh well.
Western Theme Inspiration
The room itself has been through many changes over a 10-year timeframe. It served as a baby girl nursery twice, a little girls bedroom, a guest room, an older girl’s bedroom (very briefly, as I mentioned before), and now back to being a baby nursery but this time for a BOY! I’m very new to this boy thing. I never imagined myself as a “boy mom” since all I’ve ever known is having girls.
My whole world was opening up with possibilities for all the “boy things”! Trucks, trains, tractors, cars… so many fun themes to think about. As I was brainstorming a theme for the room, I came across this painting hanging in our downstairs dining room…
Alas! The idea for our Most Adorable Western-Themed Baby nursery came from Jesse’s father’s painting of Jesse on a ranch he worked at while living in Colorado for a time. I’ve always loved this painting and I especially love that it is reminiscent of the years he spent out there. Jesse’s dad is a famous western painter, Craig Tennant, and you can find more of his phenomenal artwork here.
The Basics: Simple Nursery Furniture & Paint Color
The year prior, I had given away most of our baby nursery furniture — a sweet white Pottery Barn rocking chair and changing table that we had found on Craigslist when my oldest was a baby. Fortunately, we had kept the crib! Other than that, we needed to find some new furniture. Having been through this, I wanted to keep everything simple yet functional, and above all, inexpensive.
My parents bought us a new changing table for my baby sprinkle, and my husband managed to find a long white tv stand that we use as a bookcase. I am hoping to eventually create a custom cushion for it so that it can serve as a comfy window-seat. The girls had fun arranging baby’s library in it while anticipating the arrival.
It wasn’t even a full year after we painted this room a bluish-green color for my oldest that I was now re-painting it for a baby nursery. Pretty silly! This paint color was just what I wanted. Classic, neutral…a good base.
Next, I knew that I needed a nice fluffy rug that baby could crawl on, play on, read books together, etc so we found this thick, cozy, large yet very afforable one at the store “At Home”.
Western Baby Boy Nursery Artwork
Ironically, I used Jesse’s Dad’s painting as inspiration for the nursery, but haven’t hung it up in that room yet. In the meantime, I discovered these sweet and simple watercolor prints on Etsy and fell in love with them! I had the prints sent to me, and I framed them myself with some empty white 8×11 frames I had used prior in the girls nursery. I simply swapped them out with this new artwork. How adorable are they?!
I knew I wanted a cowhide rug to pull everything together and I found this really inexpensive faux one. We also set up this sweet little tent that we already had- my daughter likes to play in with him. They are so cute together!
